Sexual wellness has a significant diversity gap, particularly when it comes to addressing the unique needs of Black women and femmes. While sex-positivity has gained traction over the past decade, intersectionality remains underrepresented in conversations around reproductive health. Mainstream education often centers on the experiences of white women, neglecting the distinct challenges faced by Black communities. However, numerous platforms and initiatives are stepping up to bridge this gap, ensuring that reproductive health for Black women is both accessible and tailored to their specific needs. Here are six outstanding platforms making a difference.

1. Decolonising Contraception

Decolonising Contraception is a People of Color-led advocacy group founded in 2018. This platform addresses racial inequalities in sexual and reproductive healthcare by educating individuals about the barriers faced by marginalized communities. Through events, workshops, research, policy initiatives, and collective care, Decolonising Contraception supports Black and people of color in navigating sexual health services. Their comprehensive approach ensures that reproductive health for Black women is informed by their unique experiences and challenges.

2. Kimbritive

Founded by Kimberly Huggins and Brittany Brathwaite, Kimbritive emerged from the realization that Black women and girls were often excluded from honest conversations about sex. This platform aims to create a space where Black women can be both sexually informed and liberated. Kimbritive offers consulting services and workshops that cover a wide range of topics, including birth control, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), pleasure, and consent. By fostering open dialogue, Kimbritive empowers Black women to take control of their reproductive health.

3. Triple Cripples

Triple Cripples was created by Kym Oliver and Jumoke Abdullahi, two disabled Black women seeking representation in mainstream media. This platform highlights the stories of Black disabled women and non-binary individuals, focusing on navigating sex, relationships, and reproductive health. By addressing the intersection of race, sex, and disability, Triple Cripples works to eliminate taboos and promote an inclusive understanding of reproductive health for Black women with disabilities.

4. Afrosexology

Afrosexology is an online community founded by Dalychia Saah and Rafaella Fiallo. This platform promotes pleasure-based sex education tailored for Black individuals. Through virtual and in-person workshops, resources, and content, Afrosexology encourages Black women to reclaim and embrace their sexuality. By positioning sexual liberation as an act of resistance, Afrosexology supports the reproductive health and wellness of Black femmes in a culturally affirming environment.

5. Blex

Blex—a blend of “Black” and “sex”—is dedicated to empowering the Black community to lead healthy sex lives. The Blex app connects users with certified sex and relationship therapists, providing support for various sexual health and intimacy issues. Additionally, the app features a community message board where men and women can anonymously share experiences and offer mutual support. Blex ensures that reproductive health for Black women is supported through professional guidance and community engagement.

6. Black Girl’s Guide to Surviving Menopause

Menopause presents unique challenges, particularly for Black women and non-binary individuals whose experiences are often overlooked. Black Girl’s Guide to Surviving Menopause, created by Omisade Burney-Scott, is a podcast and website dedicated to sharing the realities of menopause for Black women over 50. This project explores the complexities of menopause in a society that often prioritizes youth and whiteness, providing invaluable insights and support for Black femmes navigating this life stage.

Promoting inclusive reproductive health for Black women is crucial for fostering a more equitable and supportive society. These six platforms are at the forefront of this movement, offering resources, education, and community support tailored to the unique needs of the Black community.
